In early March 2019, the USB-IF organization officially announced the next generation USB4.

On September 3, 2019, USB4(now called USB4 V1.0) specification was officially released by USB-IF organization.

Recently, on September 1, 2022, the USB-IF organization announced the new version of USB4 V2.0.

USB4 V2.0

  • The following screenshot is the main content of the USB4 V2.0 specification:

  • Let me briefly explain the main content of USB4 V2.0:

1, USB4 V2.0 version is a major update, its transmission speed of 80Gbps is one of the main features.

    2. USB4 V2.0 protocol specification will be officially released around November this year.

    3, downward compatible with USB4 V1.0, USB 3.2, USB 2.0 and lightning 3, etc.

    4. A new USB Type-C cable supporting USB4 V2.0 transmission speed of 80Gbps will be defined.

This announcement is considered a "preview", so there is no specific content of the USB4 V2.0 protocol, the official specification will be released around November this year (we should see it then).

USB transmission speed of each version

Above USB4 V2.0 mentioned an important piece of information, that is the transmission speed up to 80Gbps.

How fast this speed is, many people may not understand, let's say, this speed can meet most scenes after 10.

USB 3.0(now known as USB 3.2 Gen 1), released in 2008, meets most of your daily needs, judging by the speed of past USB versions.

By the way, here is to share the transmission speed of the past mainstream version of USB:

USB 2
In 1996, LS (Low Speed) was released, originally named USB 1.0, with a transmission rate of 1.5Mbps(0.18MB/s).

In 1998, FS (Full Speed), formerly USB 1.1, was released with a transmission rate of 12Mbps(1.5MB/s).

In 2000, HS (High Speed) was released, formerly known as USB 2.0, with a transmission rate of 480Mbps(60MB/s).

USB 3
In 2008, USB 3.2 Gen 1, formerly USB 3.0, was released with a transmission rate of 5Gbps(640MB/s).

In 2013, USB 3.2 Gen 2, formerly USB 3.1, was released with a transmission rate of 10Gbps(1280MB/s).

In 2017, USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, formerly USB 3.2, was released with a transmission rate of 20Gbps(2560MB/s).

USB4
In 2019, USB4 V1.0, formerly known as USB4, was released with a transmission rate of 40Gbps(5GB/s).

In 2022, USB4 V2.0 will be released at 80Gbps(10GB/s).

USB cable (pin)

USB 3.0 has been around for years. I thought for a long time a few years ago that USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 cables were universal.

Until one time, I used two different USB cables (an original USB 3.2 and a regular USB 2.0 cable) to connect to the same USB 3.2 portable hard drive and found that the transfer speed was different.

Yes, after that, I found that USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 have different cables, and even the number of pins is not the same (look closely at USB port A can see).

USB 2.0 has only four cables: VCC, D-, D+, and GND

USB 3.0 downward compatible SUB 2.0, so, retain the front four lines, but also added five lines (transceiver data line) : RX-, RX+, GND, TRX-, TX+.

Another problem is that while most phone cables support fast charging over 60W, they do not support USB 3.0 data transfer.
